I am wanting to keep one rooster... Probably free range. And wake up around 6 o'clock. Can a rooster do okay by himself? What is a good rooster that crows first thing in the morning nice and loud and unique?

Most roosters start to crow at 4 am. And if there is a moon, or a bright street light, they have been known to crow all night long!! I am not sure about which rooster is the best crower. Some crow more than others and many times it depends on the breed of rooster.

You shouldn't keep just one chicken/rooster. Chickens need companionship of each other and will not do well all alone. So he will need 8 or 10 hens to keep him healthy.

Good luck with all your chicken adventures!

We're glad to have you.

In general, you shouldn't keep just one chicken. Even roosters will become lonely if they don't have at least one other chicken to live with. So, I'd get some other birds along with him. But make sure that you have enough space for all of them, and that you have at least eight hens per rooster.

You can not count on a rooster crowing at 6:00 in the morning; some roosters rarely crow, and others crow even in the middle of the night. Breed doesn't really matter in terms of when roosters crow. Crowing times vary depending on the individual bird.

Or Tommaroo Long Crowers - they'll really drive your neighbors nuts. I totally agree with 2 Crows, you can't have a rooster just by himself. He might even be too depressed to crow.

Alright

Roosters are a living breathing animals not a machine and like
to crow day and night and haven't any preset times to crow and
tend to crow when it feels good to them it is only in the movies
that they crow at a set time in the morning as I have a young
roo right now 14 weeks old who crows very softy but it is only
between 2 am and 5 am and that is the only time I have seen
him crow now that doesn't mean he is not crowing at other
times when I am not looking ................

Don't assume the rooster will crow at 6:00 AM. A lot of roosters start crowing around 3:00, 4:00, or 5:00. They crow all day! Not just in the morning, they only begin crowing in the morning! He will be very unhappy by himself, so just get him about 3 hens and he will be happy. Don't get him one hen, because he may mate with her too much. (that causes a bare back)
