One more question Sunshine. Can you please tell me what you mean by sex-linked chicks and why that makes life easier? I'm a total newbie, if you haven't already figure that out.Thank you!
Sex-linked chicks can be sexed at hatch, based on color, usually. They are a red rooster over a silver factor or barred hen. Your RIR over your Barred Rock will make black sex links. Here's a link with photos: http://www.feathersite.com/Poultry/CGP/Sex-links/BRKMaking.html
As far as the number of hens, I think that you flock IS somewhat small to handle a rooster. You'd do better with at least six hens, as your current flock might be stressed or over-mated with the rooster. I have seen a small flock work, however, but you have to watch closely and separate the rooster if you see signs of stress.
