I just pour the used pine shavings from their coop on the muddy areas. I works fine except during tropical storm type events. It also decays into nice compost for my garden.

Yeah exactly this except shavings work for people with a covered run, I'm trying them next. So far old dry leaves have worked best for me, and cant beat free!To the OP, my advice would be to try a few different substrates and see what works best, there is never going to be a concise agreement on which is the BEST bedding, why? Because we live in different climates, have different concentrations of birds, and have overall different setups in general. I have tried a few things over the years, wood chips work the best for me, shaving's would be a big no, no.
I do the same only it's with "used" hay to cover the mud. I'm always aiming for grass and there is quite a bit established but those problem areas are just going to get the hay and if I get more good wood chips I think I will try those.I just pour the used pine shavings from their coop on the muddy areas.
