Best Stuff For Mucking the Coop

Hey Y'all,

Spent today cleaning under the coop. Probably should have consulted for some tips and tools earlier. We have small coop. My husband wanted to do it with a handrake but that seems like small and tedious. We moved the coop over, raked, scooped and replaced. What should we buy to make it easier? Our rake, it seems like the teeth are too far apart, but would you use a broom? That seems off too. They have dirt underfoot, and grass, and some wood chips for absorption. Would something else be better? They are out there full time now. I want to say they are 8 weeks, but it is plenty warm here in southern Mississippi and they have almost all their feathers.

OH and the second safety fence is because my adorable dogs are doofuses and definitely want a rustic chicken dinner. We are working on it.

Honestly with these tiny units moving them, or separating the sections if they're made to come apart, is the easiest way to clean. It's a pain to try to bend down and contort yourself to fit in a small space.

I specifically keep a shrub rake for coop cleaning. Teeth are closer together and the head is smaller and easier to maneuver around things.

Oh yes, for bedding, you'll need to decide on something to put in there once the grass is dead. Otherwise mud and smelly muck may become an issue. I use deep litter.

We're probably sticking with this for a year, but planning something bigger and self-built. I don't mind moving it, in fact, that part seems easy. Maybe I'll start looking at the custom coops for what makes the quickest job of it. And yes, it was kinda stinky. I can only imagine if they were full size and or there was no grass.
