Looking to have my third year of chicks this spring. The local feed mills in my area usually has chicks in Mar/April. This has been difficult for me because having the chicks in my basement for weeks is messy and inconveniently located. Is there any reason I shouldn’t/couldn’t start chicks in June when the weather is nicer and they could just be in the brooder in the garage instead of the basement? When do other Wi peeps start their babies??? Thanks!

Im in Cedarburg. Would definitely be interested in ordering some together! Do you start yours in June, or is there a better time? I guess I was mainly concerned about them being old enough to handle Winter. Is there any reason the feed mills get them so early?

Definitely! I like June. It’s warm enough to get them going outside quickly.

I'm in Michigan, and have chicks as early as April, with no issues. I have them in my garage for two or three weeks at the most, and then out to their own area in the coop, with their heat lamp or (recently) brooder plate. For the last couple of years I've had chicks from Cackle, who arrived in good shape in a cold snap. Late April or early May would be very good times!
Feed stores seem to be in competition to see who has chicks the earliest, and it makes no sense in the north, IMO.
Having chicks shipped during a hot spell wouldn't be good either, and so I don't really want them in June. Last year some came in mid-June, with no problems, but it wasn't hot then.

Hi! I'm in Milwaukee. My daughter got her chicks in February! She had them inside till 4 1/2 weeks old then put them outside with a MHP. I got my bantams in late August and they did fine in the fall with the MHP in the coop too.
I got mine from MyPetChicken and they arrived in 1 day. I'm waiting anxiously for my first eggs now!
