best way to euthanize a baby chick

I've seen people put them in a bucket with a lid and fill the bucket with CO2 (if you know anyone that homebrews or has CO2 tanks) then close the lid. They stop breathing quickly and its painless for the little guys.

I use a CO2 chamber, but I realize not everyone has the equipment for that. The easiest way to do a single chick that is relatively painless and you don't have to watch is to put them in a ziploc baggie and put them in the freezer. They will go unconscious, just like we do, and "go to sleep"... I had to do it this evening with a little millie that had a useless leg... I can't stand to watch, either.

I have a soda stream... so perhaps I can use the CO2 cartridge from there and rig something up. Brahmas have the most marvelous chirp. I'm going to miss her.

Yeah, I personally do it the ziplock in freezer technique. Of course, sometimes I forget about it, and then when I see it again, it makes me sad all over again. Still, I think it's the cleanest and most humane way to do it.

I opted for the CO2 method with soda stream cartridge. I think I did it wrong as she thrashed a bit at the end. I think I should have filled the baggy with CO2 a little and then waited until she was sleepy before filling it completely. I know it's silly but I'm going to bury her with my other ones now.

i feel SO sorry for you!

i hope that all your other chicks turn out beautiful and strong. I think you did the right thing.

Just wanted you to know that I said a prayer for you. That must've been so hard for you to do. However, I'm sure the chick felt your love - and it was right to provide peace since she couldn't have lived.

Hi,

As I posted 2 nights ago with no responses... I have a 2 week old baby Brahma. This is the second day of trying to keep her little rectum inside. It still comes out. I have tried everything that I can think of and now feel the only thing left is to euthanize her. So... do I chop her head off or twist it off? The vet gives them a shot but it is painful too. I would think chopping the head off is the most humane thing.

Suggestions?

Thanks.
I am in the same place right now. 3 weeks keeping it alive with a prolapsed rectum. Just getting worse.

I put ours in a brown paper bag and then took kitchen sheets to her neck. It was fast and I think painless and I didn't have to see much/think about it. . :( not much blood either on a baby chick.
