There is a thread going on about hatch percentages from shipped eggs.

One question that has come up is do shipped eggs need to breath? Excellent question!!!

One person says no, they don't need to breath until incubation begins.
Another says yes, they are living embryos, they need to breath.

But to pack them in tissue, place in an egg carton and cover with shredded paper is a terrible way to ship eggs.

Of the 20 shipments I incubated last year, 5 were damaged. All 5 were tissue pack.

The hatch percentages of these 5 boxes were: 3 boxes-0%, 1 box 75%, 1 box -50%.
The hatch percentage of the remaining 15 boxes averaged 60%.

Draw your own conclusions. (Even that I am a novice at hatching , yes, yes, yes!!!LOl!

What's the best way to pack eggs so they can breathe?????

I am packing the same way that my best hatches from shipped eggs came.

The eggs are placed in the bottom half of an egg carton. They are then surrounded by either wood shavings or shredded paper. The top of the egg carton is taped over this.
Then the egg carton is placed in either a small box( I do this when I ship 9 eggs or less) that is then placed in a larger box that is packed with shredded paper or assorted shipping materials( foam popcorn, shredded paper or plastic bubble wrap). If I ship more than 9 eggs then I place the egg carton in the middle of all the packing material making sure it can not move. When I double box I make sure the smaller box can not move inside the larger box and is surrounded by at least 2 inches of packing material on all sides.
