Best way to secure wire fencing to fence posts

I'm designing my chicken run currently. The roo and ladies are getting a little rambunctious in the coop and could use some fresh air! My question to all of you is, how do you secure the fencing to the wood posts? I've heard metal zip ties, and staples. Can anyone provide pictures for me? I just want to make sure that I attach the wire as secure as possible. Thanks much!

I used nails on mine, hit them with a hammer about half-way then hit the nail from the side until the nail is pressed over the wire and wood.

I use 1-1/4 inch galvanized nails, they grip and won't break while bending it.

Make sure you use plenty of nails with a spacing of 2 or 3 inches of space between each nail.

Hardware cloth ~ Screws & washers are the way to go.



I think mine are 3/4" or 1" screws, really don't remember. (click on pic for close up)

Chicken wire ~ Staples, small ones work better, like the ones pictured. Bent over nails will work also.

I used those little u-shaped staple/nails and all I did was beat up my fingers. They look like crap too (not my fingers... well, maybe. But I was referring to the nails).

I'm building mine now and am using 1 1/4 inch Lathe screws. They are made for going through metal and have a big fat washer head on them. I attach it near the corners of the hardwire mesh to grab as may wires a possible.

That is the important question - the best way to attach your wire will depend, in large part, on what type of wire you are attaching.

I put chicken wire up between my coops and use those little staples. Needle nose pliers work great for holding the little staples. Sure saves on the fingers!

+1 as being a woodworker I learned that trick a long time ago with small finishing nails.

Yup...once you get your rhythm it's a piece of cake. However, in the beginning, it was comical! And a large magnet comes in handy to find all of the dropped staples in the grass.
