Hi all,

Just wondering what people feel is the best way to set an egg in an incubator. Last year I set 20 eggs on their sides and had 7 ducklings hatch (I also had 2 more but one was deformed and died 2 days after hatching and one didn't make it out if the shell)

Wondering if people feel standing them upright is better or if I should stick to lying down. Also I have been given 24 eggs this year, should I set just 20 and pick 4 not to go in or can I try squeezing the other 4 in and discard any that don develop after candling?

well, i always lie them on their side, but when i use my egg turner in my other incubator they sit on their end. Are you turning the eggs a few times a day? the deformity makes me wonder if you're turning them enough. what kind of incubator do you have..i have poor hatch rates in my foam incubator..much beter in my brinsea..it may just be a low quality incubator that doesn't retain a constant heat. Also..is your humidity at the correct level? I would say..depending on your incubator i'd just put 20 in if it has places for the 20 eggs..if it's one of them that you just lay them in on the bottome then try squeezing

Thanks for replying :) it's a king suro so it turns automatically and maintains the temp and humidity automatically too, had good maintaining last year. Alice was the only duck with a problem, saw the others yesterday and they are still fit and well, they're huge hehe :)
