Best way to start out - order day old chicks or fertile eggs?

Absolutely. Apologies, it escaped me I'm on here boo-hooing and didn't even tell folks where I'm at.

We live in Troy, So. South center portion of Alabama, about an hour South of Montgomery

Apparently not, since we just had chicks mailed to us and the TSC guy just told me his new shipment is coming in tomorrow.
And which hatchery do you drive by? If it's driving distance from my place that would solve my probs..

Mine came from The Poultry House, Arrington, TN. I guess it depends on your idea of reasonable drive.

Silkies and Buff Brahmas. Both were in our order and both didn't make it. I have a few Golden laced Wyandottes that seem happy and healthy now, but I originally set all this up to raise some silkies (and my wife really liked the brahmas).

let's find you some silkie chicks to buy . there should be around some somewhere unless you do have that " AI stop movement" on poultry ...which I'm getting mixed reviews on ...that some say yes some say no.

I feel your pain. I have been incubating like crazy since January and have yet to hatch a single chick. I have had shipped eggs and local eggs. I have had clear eggs and Yolkers and Quitters and baby's that died in shell right before hatch. I finally ordered week old chicks from a farm (I know this is a debatable age for shipping but it worked for me and sometimes desperate times call for desperate measures) the birds were properly packaged with grow gel and arrived in great shape. I went that route knowing that it could turn out badly. It turned out to be the Best decision to finally start my flock. You will have to look for a farm and ask the seller what their experience has been with shipping their birds, then take into consideration the travel time and ambient temps they will experience. If you can get it all to mesh then if might work for you. Best of luck.

How about Wayne Farm on Henderson Highway in Troy Alabama .( Don't know which breeds they have).
then there is a website http://www.Alabamasilkies.com there in Piedmont Alabama . These Silkie folk are NPIP. The silkie people only have a 4 chick minimum at $7.50 a chick. will either of those work for you?

I would absolutely love to go to a local provider, but am having trouble finding any. Unless I want a mixed group I'm looking at a multi-hour drive over to Georgia.

Tried to post a "I want to buy" ad in BST forum but it won't let me.

Frustrated and sad...

. I feel your frustration. This forum is very active and has a lot of content. I prefer to ready and figure out stuff without asking aI dont know what to ask just yet as I have found what I think is everything I need to start. A lot of questions I would habe had starting off I found by just reading. But if you do want to find a specific breed in your area, you cannot use the buy sell. It's done so dummy accounts arent set up just to advertise or exploit the forum members ,bit it stinks for new members. I really want to find someone local to me in Valdosta, GA not only for some easter eggers but for some conversation and a look at thier set up.
