Best Winter Treat Ever

Mine don't eat oatmeal!!
Or any other treats for that matter. They are 2 yrs old, rescues and I've had them 2 months now. Yesterday I added scratch to the oatmeal and still no reaction. It was so cold last week I was sure hoping they'd go for it, but no

I've tried yogurt several times, no go. They have a very mild interest in bread. I don't get it, maybe they just never had it before so they ignore it??

So today I just gave them plain old pellets, again...

Too funny! Mine didn't give a hoot about the hanging cabbage, a few nibbles & then it froze! They love the warm oatmeal though! One of their favorites!!!!

Oh my girls love warm oatmeal with applesauce or apple pieces in it and they will knock you down if you come out carrying warm steamed brown rice.

....i'm gonna have to mix some up for my hens..i bet they would love it also!

Do you guys have grit for your birds too with all that oatmeal and other goodies?

I ran out of feed one morning and just scrambled up a bunch of eggs for them. No salt and pepper, just the eggs. And they all just gobbled that stuff right up! I didn't even think about the oatmeal. Can it be the instant kind or does it have to be the regular kind?

Gloria,

Oh YES! Mine have the choice of grit or oyster shell bits to chomp on.. and they also have the dried crushed up egg shells in their mash too!

As far as the oatmeal.. I'm not sure. We only have the stuff in the tube/can thing.. either quick oats or slow cook, can't remember which one I buy!

Hi AW Chickens, I had two Andalusian cocks (now in chicken-heaven) and they didn't like the cold either. You have to take great care of their combs as they suffer very badly from frostbite. I was told to slather the comb with Petrolium Jelly; it certainly worked well. They are wonderful birds, incredibly gentle for such a big fierce-looking bird. I really miss them wandering round my garden and I intend to get some more in the coming year. In cold weather, in the mornings I feed my chickens warm porridge oats to which I add a little olive oil, water or milk, a little cider vinigar + then a good sprinkling of Poultry Spice. This is a British product which is a mixture of spices, a rather old fashioned thing but it really helps them when it's bad weather, moulting and it also seems to help the hens come in to lay (they love it, there is nothing left after a couple of minutes); in the US I would use cayenne pepper. There's a discussion going on elsewhere in this forum. Enjoy your adopted friend; my two were Laced Silvers.

I made oatmeal for my girls the other day. First time I've done it, but they looked so cold and pathetic when I went to let them out that morning! They stuffed themselves silly! I put some oyster shell and pomagranite seeds in there, too. They spent the entire rest of the day at the back door, begging for more!

A treat that went over big with my birds was yogurt with cornmeal stirred in to it till it thickened. Stand back when they start shaking off their beaks! Splatters everywhere. They layed eggs that day too!

oatmeal and bacon grease
or suet
just a teaspoon full per bird
(off the teaspoon)

i give them burgers occationally but especially when they are molting
scrambled eggs with shells well crushed in them

hot rice .......they love this one a lot
i guess they think it's grubs or something like fly larve

vi
