Has anyone ever bred Bettas or currently breeding them? If so, what would you say the difficulty level is? I am considering starting it.

I've never owned or bred bettas, though I thought about it, as they are beautiful and easy (as far as fish go) to take care of. It sounds pretty awesome.

Bettas (by Robert J. Goldstein) is a good book to start off with that I think talks about how to breed bettas, if I remember correctly.

Best of luck!

Keeping bettas is easy (though, keeping them right is not nearly as easy as you are often lead to believe by the conditions in which many are kept - the difference between what they can survive and what allows them to thrive)- but breeding them is a bit more involved and complicated. Their reproduction is fascinating, though, and well worth the effort when all goes well. Have you got a good system available to allow for housing your female population safely away from breeding tanks for the males?

I love bettas I used to raise some.
Breeding them is not easy, and can be pretty fatal... I tried to breed two bettas and the ate each others fins and stuff.

Well thanks for y'all's help! I don't really have anything that I got specifically for Betta breeding yet. I still have to do some more research on it. I will try to look into that book... it will probably be a lot of help to me! Thanks for y'all's advice and help! Does any one know what I would need to successfully breed Bettas?

Head over to Ultimate Betters. 'tis a forum. There will be more than enough information there to get you well on your way. I used to breed mouthbrooding bettas. 'tis easy, not like Betta splendens, which are more tricky due to the aggression.

Well you will need a place to put them as they cannot be together all the time, you need a breeding separator. Again its risky to breed them, they will fight AND they can eat each other literally until they die. Just make sure you use the divider, and slowly implement them. I'd recommend doing some heavy research first. I tried to breed mine a male and female, sadly they tore each other up so I had to separate them. Breeding bettas is no easy task, but with the right amount of knowledge, patience, and time its possible.

Thanks. Yes I still need to do research but you have definitely helped! Thanks again!

So let's say I all ready have a male and a female. They are in two different tanks and have not seen each other yet. Should I put the tanks side by side to let them see each other and/or put a divider in a tank and let them see each other through a divider? After that, I should wait until they show signs of desiring to breed. Should I them place the female in the tank with the male after he has made a bubble nest and wait until he chases the female away after breeding to get her out? Are those the right steps? Should I do anything to help if they have created a bubble nest with eggs? What if the male does not do all the work he should be doing? And what age should I separate the fry from the dad and each other? And do I mainly tell the male and female apart from the coloring? Sorry about all the questions.
