Also, what size is the tank he’s in? If it’s too small, the issue could also be stress related.

For now he has a 1 1/2 tank...

I’m thinking he has a swim bladder issue. Careful with moving him, they can go into shock.

Hmm. Ideally, bigger is better but that’s not the worst. So, it probably isn’t stress related. He may have fin rot (which, a lot of times they are old with it in pet stores).

I got him quite a few months ago....and he seemed very young and active until now. How do I tell if he has fin rot?

Looked more into swim bladder issues... It may just be too full, causing him to swim sideways. If that’s the case it should deflate and he should go back to normal.

His fins look fine from the picture. They would look shredded. It was just a "just in case" suggestion.
