I'm a new member in Phoenix. I've had chickens for a few years and I feed them lay pellets, scratch and veggie scraps. Lately their feathers are looking poorly and they are plucking and eating them. I asked my local feed store about organic feed (or any other better feeds)and he stated it's to hot here any suggestions on a better diet.

Hi :welcome

Glad you could join the flock! Eating feathers does point towards them needing more protein in their diet. Tuna is fine for them to have, mine love it. You could also swop your feed to a game feed which should be higher in protein for them but have oyster shell available for them all time so they get the calcium they need for the egg production.

Please do drop by the feeding and watering your flock section of the forum for further help with this. Here is the link ~ https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/12/feeding-amp-watering-your-flock

Wishing you the very best of luck and enjoy BYC :frow

I dont think buying tuna to feed chickens is a good solution. But tuna leftovers are fine.

One marine biologist said that eating tuna is like eating panda bear.

If you feed the canned tuna, look for the low sodium kinds. Chickens do not benefit from high salt intake. Mashed hard boiled eggs will also provide protein., and chickens won't recognize it as eggs.
