how smart were you, bypassing the chick/brooder/teenager/wonder if its a rooster or hen stages? I think chicks are cute and all, but I love it when they are grown! Your pics make me wish my Aus pullets would hurry up and get that beautiful plumage! LOVE those names! (my daughters black cochins are circe and calypso!)

Her black Ameracauna is Venus...

LOL, it wasn't smart -- I was scared of trying to raise chicks! We don't have anywhere in the house to protect them from our cat, either, and our cat LOVES little live squeaky things . . . loves 'em to death, IYKWIM.

He's a very good hunter and the last thing we wanted to come home to was a chick massacre.

And I didn't know how to get rid of roosters, and all that, so we went with the safer option and had somebody else do it! We were very lucky the hobby farm people said yes, other people looked at me like I was crazy, ie, "I don't care how much you pay me, you can raise your own blasted birds!"

It's not smart, just a combination of terror and serendipity.

Enjoy your Gals Whitewater.

By any chance were those birds originally from MT Healthy? You weren't sure on the M hatchery, if so I've had only good luck with their birds.

I put this year's group of not so fluffy anymore fuzzy buts into their new coop this past Monday evening. The older birds are jealous because the new coop has a fancy top hat, they keep looking at it and giving me the stink eye treatment.

I need to be more terror stricken then, I have 30+ chicks and 12 6wk olds along with 4 ready to lay pullets. Ive decided I really enjoy buying birds from breeders, to know what Im getting and the instant gratification too! Now I have to choose the faves and sell the rest. All pullets, except for a few BCM and Partridge Cochin roosters...
Hope to see more pics ....

They are beautiful!! I believe you mean Meyer Hatchery?? That is where our chicken farmer gets his from..

LOL, how many hatcheries are there with a name beginning with M?
lol.png

The exact quote from the farm gals is: "Either McMurry or that other one that begins with M"

So who knows?

Whitewater (who notes in passing that I took a good look today and *all* of their eyes are brown, though Antigone the Bold has eyes that are amber rather than brown -- considerably lighter. Also that the breed standard says that dark brown eyes are ok. And she has yellow on the bottom of her feet and the other two are pink.)
