I got my first chickens 48 years ago: a pair of speckled, mixed breed bantams.
a Christmas present from my grandmother, who had always loved chickens.
While I was growing up I made my pocket money by raising chickens for eggs and meat
I would get 100 straight run chicks and butcher most of the roosters and sell
the eggs from the hens to the local grocery. Until the day they quit paying enough
to local producers to cover feed costs. A big commercial operation took our market.
Through the years we have had birds off and on. none right now. I'm incubating 48 eggs for a friend.
I'm fond of Wyandottes, have had White rocks, Austra whites, buff orps, brown leghorns, Brahmas
and of course those "Banty's" also various ducks geese and quail
