Beware of even the "Good Dog"!!

If it were a Pit or Rot there would be many post defending the dog.

The pit or rot attacks a person,,, Oh bad owner.....
a bird dog, with no training or workin as to being a bird dog,,,,, oh bad dog...

Why am I sick???????????????

A freaking dog bred to attack, hurts a person,,,, it's a bad owner....

a dog bred to find birds, and by the way is gentle with them if trained according to their breeding, harms a chicken because the owner is to lazy to train and work with them, and picked a cute fuzz ball from a pet shop with out doing any research on the breed,,, now it is the breeds fault????

So make up my mind,,,, is a Pit or Rotty, safe with my young kids because I'm a responsible owner,,,,, or are my chickens in danger because I like bird dogs?

Hypocrites, make me vomit,,, is it the breed or owner?

If a dog attacks. Take a look at its parents and lineage. Traits can be bred in and out of dog breeds like any animal through careful selection. Can also be a factor of the owner, lack of training or a combination of all of the above.

Kids should never be unsupervised with ANY dog. Check the ER stats on how many babies crawling on the floor are nailed by pocket dogs every year. It isn't just the big boys you need worry about.

Dogs bred over decades for specific characteristics are just that. In the hands of a knowledgeable person they may be fine. In the hands of the uninitiated they are a proverbial time bomb. Realistically we need less emphasis on dog training and more emphasis on training people concerning the breeds they are considering long before they get them.

Hope this helps clear the nausea for you.

First of all, I didn't "pick out a cute fuzz ball from a pet shop", I adopted my springer from the Humane Society when she was 5 or 6 years old and had been wandering the roads and woods for God knows how long. And she was emaciated and had lost most of the hair on her hindquarters from a flea infestation. And had I known when I was at the shelter and she attached herself to me like a leach that it was an indication of acute separation anxiety, I probably would have passed. So, yeah, she is psycho, because she goes nuts every time I leave the house, the room, wherever I go that she's not. And, yes, I've tried retraining her, but if I adopt a dog or cat, it's a lifetime commintment to me. So, please don't lecture me on my choice of dog. Okay, I'm done ranting.

Yeah nauticalbuoy, if you wanna make a point of some sort, dont vomiit on your audience. It turns them off and they stop listening.

I agree with nauticalbuoy. Make a comment on a vicious breed like a pit bull and you're attacked from every quarter. Like a bunch of ........angry pit bulls!

I have one of those vicious breeds. I own German Shepherds. But I'd NEVER bury my head in the sand and claim she wouldn't hurt someone. She is quite capable and I know for a fact she would defend me and mine to the death.
I also know enough to NEVER trust her with my birds. She is already a suspected/probable duck killer. (my duck, not someone elses)

Sorry to hear about your conflicts between beloved Dog and Chicks.

We've got 6 RIR chicks (about 7 wks old) in the Casa di Pollo (actually a tractor that is currently living on the patio). A few months ago we were adopted by a black lab mix (about 7 months old) that seems to be very docile towards them. We'll keep your story in mind when it comes time to let the girlies (we hope) out for their free range time.

Exactly my point, that I would never trust my dog alone with my chickens. If they are free-ranging, she will be in the house or on a leash by my side. It removes all doubt and anxiety.

We adopted a rescue Dane last year. One day he followed me into the coop without my realizing it.

I had a flash of panic, but there was no problem. Chickens are simply beneath his dignity.

I love danes!!

But I love all large/giant breed dogs.

I have 3 dogs...2 GS mixes and one JRT. I will never allow them to be loose with my chickens. I have a large run for the dogs so that I don't have to tie them. The dogs are let out in the morning and after lunch I let out my chickens to free range. Everyone gets let out to run and enjoy being loose but I don't have to worry about my dogs attacking my chickens.

I have to agree that you can't trust a bird dog with your birds. My Jake, a wonderful, smart, gentle, 6 year old golden retriever inadvertently killed one of my girls a couple of years ago. She flew over a 6 foot fence and Jake apparently carried her around until she died. Not a mark on her, just wet. And I was home and didn't hear a thing. I felt just awful, reenforced the fence but could not blame the dog for doing what he has been bred to do for generations.

I am sorry you lost one of your girls.
