I was wondering what the temperament of Biefehelder hens will be? We have 3 Biefehelder x Maran crosses. They almost make a noise like a growl at me when I go to collect eggs. They are not horrible but they are not sweet and docile like our EEs. The chicks we bought were mean to our Ameracauna chicks. What should I expect from them? Are the Beifehelders good with kids?

They're "growling" which is a sign of a broody, you're removing their egg hence the attitude also.
I didn't know if she was broody because she will sit for 1 to 2 hours and then leave the nest for the rest of the day.

I'm not saying she's broody but it's a sound broody's make. She's just telling you she's not happy with you close to her egg ... Read they make good Mama's but also that they're a docile breed.

Any individual bird might be great with other birds or kids, or not.

I'd heard Buff Orpington roosters were docile. I had three that were absolutely not...
Mean chickens do not last long on our farm. They either find a new home or will go to the freezer.
