I got my 2 day old pullets this morning, and I already have a serious bully! She pecked and terrorized all of the others ( 3 different breeds) until I separated her. Now everyone is happy, but her. She is, of course, lonley. My question is, how long can I leave her in solitary, and how can I re-introduce her. The other 7 are quite happy without her.

Place her enclosure next to the others so they can see each other. I have heard of people doing basically what you are and giving the one a time out each time they are aggressive. They are going to sort out their pecking order no matter what you do.

I really don't have the ability to separate them and let them see each other. I am pretty sure that keeping her separate, for very long, might have a negative effect. I am very new at this and hope that I can eventually bring her back into the fold!

Hiya! First, welcome to BYC, you're in the right place to learn.

Put her back in. Everytime she gets overly aggressive, take her back out for a short period. It upsets the pecking order. At 2 days, they already start trying to be bossy. Make sure you have plenty of feed and water so she can not keep any of the others away from it. DID you get these pullets from a breeder or a hatchery? I have only ever had that problem with cockerels. They are naturally more aggressive... Anyway, good luck with them, enjoy them, and take lots of pics. They are going to change so rapidly over the next few weeks, they'll look like completely different chickens.

Oh, and unless she is pecking others bloody, i'd leave her in. They will work it out believe it or not. It is difficult to watch and not do anything, I know. If the pecking does turn bloody, have some blue kote on hand to spray the injured area.

I finally found a way to put her in the box with the others, but with a wire barrier for now. She was not just pecking one, but attacking all of them, to the point where two of them had their eyes swollen shut. Yesterday, I tried putting one in with her at a time, and watching them. I may do that a few more times today. Thanks for your input.

I had a sex link hen that was a major bully and she would pluck feathers out of the other gals and chase them . She seemed to go from one to another depending on her mood. In my current situation I am not allowed to have a roo and I think that was part of the problem. This is the first time I have ever had a flock without a roo and I think if things had been different a roo would have set her down and she wouldn't have been such an unholy terror to the rest. Although I could be wrong.

Anyway nothing I did seemed to make a difference and she finally had to be removed for good. The flock is much happier without her and they look much better.

Good luck

HI and Welcome,
Its good you found the wire barrier as that is what I was going to suggest. I have had weaker chicks that have hatched and had to seperate them so they would not get picked on till they gained their strenght but did not want them to be alone and that is how I would keep everyone together but have them seperated for protection.
Be patient - hopefully the chicks will all work it out. Good luck and enjoy them. It get addicting!

You may also contact where you got them and see if they will trade her. Might be another solution.
