Big Business!!

No, they don't.
It would be easy to make sure the birds they see are the right birds, atleast by appearance.
All we have is dirt bag, puppy mill chicken breeders here, unfortunately.
The head hancho 4H chicken lady is the biggest breeder her and she had no idea what she's doing and teaches the kids all she knows.
She actively "stud swaps" roosters with her friends and people she finds for fresh "blood" for her birds.
As I've said before, feed stores are legally required to use the labels that are sent by the hatchery with the chicks, even if they're obviously not the breed listed.
Most feed stores use Hoovers and Hoovers sucks at breeds and labels.
We have some good breeders here. Of course you're limited on breeds to the ones they work with and as it goes if you're doing it even close to right seems it only lasts so many years before they realize it's a money pit.
I think we'll always have a limited selection of breeds you can source for a decent place. We have traders, flippers and auction goers. Not breeders but buy low and sell for profit types. Right now is the time of year egg factories disperse their spent hens. They go to auctions that you have to know about to attend. They sell in 100 lots for a $1 or $2 per bird then CL and Facebook are flooded with "one year old prime" layers. Some sell for what seems reasonable to the unknowing.
I trust health with small breeders way way more then from the ones that have birds changing hands often.

I wish I had atleast one good breeder here, every time I try to set up good stock in something, I have to buy hatching eggs from across the country.
You're going to be proud of me, I bought some brown leghorns to pad out my chick order.

I wouldn't mind that so much but cost of living and wages are lower here then a lot of places.
I can't afford those California hatching egg prices most everyone asks for eggs.

Some people think highly of their eggs.
"It's $60 per straight run chick or $20 per egg. Shipping not included."
Who do you think you are? Greenfire?
Edit: actually, the birds I want from greenfield are only $12 an egg.
