Well, I think I finally got up the nerve and the weather is cooling down. There are a couple of choices where I can order Cornish X the first of next month. I talked to a friend and got the name of a processor I will be calling to make sure they can do my birds when the time comes. I have given myself and my children the "we CAN'T get attached" pep talk about 5,000 times. I think I am ready. Wish me luck.

It is absolutely frightening!!!! But, we want to eat meat and this is the right way......

Good luck to you, too.

I tell my kids "Don't worry, we won't eat these chickens while they're little & cute"

For myself, I find it helps to view the meat birds the same way I view the produce I plant in my veg garden. I tend it well right from its start, provide for all needs, protect from predators, prevent disease, admire its growth, and anticipate its wonderful taste at harvest.

Cornish X grow fast & seem more like dinosaurs than chickens. They eat & poop a lot too, you'll be more glad than sad to see them all go. It's only 8-10 weeks until they're grown, so you shouldn't have too much time for making happy memories with them.

And then you get to take them to a processor, like sending them off to get jobs and having them send home groceries. I wish there was a place like that near me, especially at the low prices I hear some folks are paying per bird. There's very little that I would do with a chicken for anyone else for $1.50 apiece, but I would be glad to pay somebody else that price to process my chickens.

I wish you success, start collecting good chicken recipes!

Thank you.

Oh, trust me, we have LOTS of chicken recipes we LOVE.

I honestly wouldn't even mind doing all the nasty work...cleaning them, etc. I just can't hold something in my hands and take its life. A part of me would die with each chicken until there was nothing left. I used to help my ex with fish and deer....he killed it all and I helped with everything else, so I know I could handle that. I just hope this processor is reasonable like some are paying.

I think the fast growing alien/dinosaur chicken aspect of the cornish x is what will make me be able to handle this. There is no way I could eat one of my precious little lying hens.

I'm also going to try meat birds for the first time, this fall (they will be shipped Sept 3rd)
I'm scaled down my first plans of 6 Cornish X and 6 Red Broilers to just 8 Cornish x
the processor I will use is about a 1 hour drive and I only want to make one trip.
if it goes well I bet I will do it again.
I like the idea of being more "responsible" for my food. And try to give them a decent life even if it is short.
I have a serious chicken addiction, time to get a home on acreage!

Processing is so expensive. Can't you find someone to assist you who can "do the
deed"? I'd help ya but it would be to far a drive.

Squirrel is good eating, especially the fresh ones that are still warm on the side of the
road. Yummmm

Luvmychicknkids, you have the right attitude and I commend you on your bravery. I hope one day I can do the same. Mentally I'm not there yet but I feel that with each month that passes, I get closer. Best of luck to you on your endeavor.

Oh come on, it would only be a skip and a hop!!!! LOL Actually, it is POSSIBLE that I could find someone, just don't know who, yet. Most of my friends are of the squeamish variety.

Yeah, EllyMae, it has taken me a LONG time to think I am ready to try this. If you are thinking about it, you will get there.

I love all my animals so much it has been hard to accept the idea of raising them for food. But, it really is feeling right, now. Good luck and thank you.
