Big hatcheries 90% sexing accuracy

It goes without saying, but...

Tractor supply is notorious for mislabeling the breed of chicks they’re selling so I would not be surprised in the slightest if they’ve mislabeled the gender of their chicks as well.

Also, like many have stated before, a 90% guarantee is pretty darn good with hatcheries considering all the variables that can come into play when having to sex chicks.

It's good to see someone has luck with my pet chicken. I ordered 4 chicks in June and just found out 1 of the 4 is a rooster. If you don't report it to them between 10 and 22 weeks they won't do anything about it. I wonder why they would have a deadline to report a rooster unless they want to stick the amateur chicken owners such as myself with an over priced rooster in my case a $33 rooster. Currently my pet chicken is the only hatchery that offers Favaucana's, so it's not like I could have got one from somewhere else. Here's what they replied to me:

Hi Mandi,

Thank you for writing My Pet Chicken to let us know.

You are correct; the saddle and hackle feathers on your Splash Favaucana show that he is a rooster. We're sorry to hear you received a sexing error! It's heartbreaking when that happens; please accept our condolences.
The sexing error reporting period for your hatch date began on 9/2/2019 and ended on 11/24/2019. Unfortunately, because you did not notify us of the error within 10 - 22 weeks of the chick's arrival, as is required by our sexing guarantee, we cannot offer you a refund

How unfortunate Mandi! If they know it came from then they should provide good customer service and give you a refund or replacement pullet. They have all the ability to do the right thing but CHOSE not to.

I've always ordered from My Pet Chicken who have a 100% sexing guarantee. They have never been wrong for me. I've order more than 100 chicks from them over the past decade, sexed bantams too, never a wrong bird for me.

Hatcheries that offers 90% sexing guarantee has leeway to slip in 10% worth of mistakes into your order. I'm sure some is on purpose.

Tractor supply is a whole different category of messed up as far as chicks go.

Out of my four '90 percent pullet' i have two cockerels,,, so I guess it all depends on what portion of the 'whole' they pull your chicks from. Mine was little better than a straight run although I paid for 90 percent vent sexed pullets - I got mine at a Feed store in Half Moon Bay where I had originally got my now nearly 10 year old hens when they were day olds - those ended up 100 percent pullet. So, foolish me, I thought the process was nearly infalliable.

Going to look into accuracy of so- called 'sex linked' chicks in the future.

Sex linked chicks are 100% accurate. They can be sexed by down color alone. Red sex link crosses produce cockerel chicks that are yellowish and pullet chicks that are red. Black sex link crosses result in cockerel chicks that are black with a white head spot and pullet chicks that are solid black.

vent sexing is a brutal procedure, barbaric on bantams which is why MOST WILL NOT vent sex bantams. the first couple hatchery orders i did not get any males. but now seems more common. maybe the old timers have retired! i have, however, gotten better at picking them out from a feed store. i am pretty good at picking. for bantams i prefer to hatch my own.
