This is my hen Missy she is a road island red 2 years old. She has this lump on her leg, and it showed up over night. It has stayed the same size for a few weeks but recently has grown a little. She is holding it up when she stands and she’s not running to me like normal. She is still eating and drinking and laying but what should I do? The vet is too expensive and an hour away. We have done bumblefoot surgery in our garage and they have healed but I’m scared she’ll bleed since the lump is on the side of her leg.

Can you get pictures from different angles of the leg? Is there a scab on it?
I cannot right now I’m in high school. There is no scab, it’s not red it’s warm but not hot the bottom of her foot is swollen but again there no scab. It’s not bumble foot I just treated 4 other girls for it. I think it’s gout. Their feed has 3.7% calcium with some o top of that and 20% protein. We also have hard water which is salty. She has most symptoms of gout. She had an egg shell stuck to her uterus that I removed for her. She kept pushing and pushing so I removed it slowly and carefully she also had a foul smell coming from her vet. I checked her again a couple days after and the smell, redness, and the shell was gone and she looked like she felt better. Now she picks she’ll walk around and eat in our 1/2 acre and when she stops she holds her foot up. She’s had this for weeks and I’m wondering if my other girls are starting to get it too. They hold their feet up when they stop but they don’t have lumps or bumble foot. They are also not producing near as much as they use too that why I’m almost positive it’s gout because they are getting all this nutrients and it’s not no where to go but the kidneys to filter and then the joints.

Hi,
I have a hen with the same problem.
Both her legs are affected, recently one started to reduce in size. How is your hen doing? Did you find out what it was?

Can you post some pictures of the legs? Since it is on both legs it could be a joint infection such as mycoplasma synovitis (MS.) Are the toes also swollen, or just the ankles?

Ankles and toes as well.
