Big question, why did all of you new chicken owners get chickens?

I live on a farm with ponds, so I got ducks to put in my dog's easter basket.

A co-worker saw my ducks and asked me to get her some. She also wanted 2 chicks.

I know better than to look at those adorable little fluff balls, but I had to pick some up for this co-worker. I returned the next day to get mine.

Mine are expected to work. While being lawn ornaments, they are supposed to eat bugs.

We decided to get chickens because then we could feed ourselves with eggs and meat. Turns out, we fell in love with them and became obsessed.

Short term, a hobby, a new interest, learn something.
Mid term, they are really great pets.
Long term, cheaper than buying grocery organics and I know for sure how it was handled.

From about age 2-5 my grandparents would babysit me everyday. And every single day we would go down the road to visit my granpa's friend
"Orlie" and he had a HUGE farm with well over a hundred different kinds of chickens (and and probley an equal amount of cats). I LOOOOOOOVED the chickens and my favorite thing to do was grab a big scoop of corn and feed the chickens in the barnyard. I loved how they flocked around me ready for treats. I also loved the baby chicks and was always excited when new chicks were hatched. And I remember how fond of all his chickens Orlie was. And how he knew every single chicken or Roosters personality and name. They all were very bonded to him and great with people compared to all other chickens on farms I came in contact with later in life.

Anyways you might say a good amount of my childhood memories have chickens involved. And I have always wanted to own chickens myself someday. But because of divorce when I was 13 my family split up and headed out of the country, and into a very urban surrounding. So I guess I just forgot about wanting chickens. Thinking it wouldn't be possible.

Recently I started doing research and discovered the urban chicken movement. Honestly before I started to research my interest was piqued by my neighbor. About two years ago my next door neighbor (lets call her neighbor A) said that our other neighbor (neighbor B) had chickens and ducks in her backyard. Neighbor A leaved between us so I never personally saw the chickens or ducks. But eventually I did start hearing them occasionally. Neighbor A and I did not care. We are all animal lovers on our city street. Even when the Rooster started to crow, no one complained (though she did rehome him to be considerate). But I did start doing research. And started remembering how much I loved Chickens quirky/funny personalities. I also remembered how good fresh eggs are!

And then one lucky day I found a ad on Craigslist advertising white silkies for sale. And the rest is history

Got tired of having to beg or wait in line for fresh eggs. Especially when the chickens would "molt", "weather was too cold" "Weather was too hot", balh, blah, blah.
