Big question, why did all of you new chicken owners get chickens?

Because I am trying to get more self reliant due to the countries issues. Also, I see the baby chicks each year at work, and take the injured and sick ones home to care for, and just decided it was time to do it for me. I will still take those home when it happens, but mine are now young ladies....and mine....LOL

I never thought in my wildest dreams or visions, that I would be having so much fun, and get so much enjoyment out of them!

My family moved to five acres and my dad and I have been really interested in being self-sufficient, especially with this economic time. When the house we bought had a decent orchard and a garden we felt the next step would be to acquire some chickens. I have a love for animals and find it rather relaxing caring for them. I want to someday have my own farmette, and well this was a good way to start. The healthier eggs and better meat was just a plus to it all.

Another teacher approached me, asking if I knew anyone with chickens we could incubate, since I go out to a farm to sheep her once a week. My instructor had an incubator and got some eggs for me. The city allows for six chickens, and after they her hatched, after all the work I did to get them to that point, how could I not take them home? I've got five german shepherds, how hard could six chickens be?

I got my chickens so I could get my property farm accessed.. I started out with just 12, and sold thier eggs to my family friends and co workers.....and now our eggs are in such demand we had to get 25 more babies.... I think thats called chicken math!!! I absolutely love my chickens... even my evil Rooster Brewster....We are now building a duck enclosure....

I lost a German Shepherd and had a lot of 'care giver' left over. Saw a few weaklings in a bin at tractor supply and had to 'save' them (got them free). Knew nothing about chickens and had never before thought of having them but there I was. Sadly, the three of the first batch passed, so I bought the last one some cuddle buddies. He passed the next day but the buddies are still with me. Chicken math then kicked in and I now have 9 all together. It was the happiest accident ever.

I was born & raised a city girl for 48 years, but loved doing a backyard garden with my uncle. Then my hubby said when his military career was over in April of this year, he wanted to move back to Texas where he lived for 4 years before joining the Navy.
So after house hunting for almost a year, we found a home with a acre of land in the country to raise our two little girls. I also started researching chickens too, drove my hubby nuts, but thrilled my two little girls. So we drove from California to Texas in two days, with two U-hauls, towing two cars, we each had one daughter & one dog in the trucks with us. To watch my girls run & play in the front or backyard & feel as safe as I did when we lived on Base, means the world to me.
We now have 13 chickens, (we were married on June 13th, so the number 13 does not phase us. I have also been drooling over the ducklings & goslings I see at the feed store too. And my girls have been asking about rabbits.
I do not miss the city life, and plan on expanding my raised bed garden next year (one garden for the chickens). I have started planting fruit trees too. As for chickens, I wanted the fresh eggs, but like others have posted, I sit for hours watching them chase bugs or each other. I love when they jump on my lap and go to sleep. My girls love going out to hold the chicks, or fight over who is going to give the girls their snacks.
It is a more relaxing lifestyle that I want for my children, they love their chickens.

This is what life is all about, a happy child, because a chick had jumped on her lap and she can pet & love it.

I went to work at a historic house with a working farm and of course there were chickens. I guess I just fell in love and when we hatched out new babies at work I could not resist the little fuzzbutts.
I took home 12 little ones and ended up with 8 roosters (6 of them were delicous) LOL.
Now I am up to 12 laying hens, one barnyard mutt that is 7 weeks old, and 6 one week olds in the brooder.
I love my chickies, they give me eggs and lots of entertainment, the stress relief that I get from watching them is priceless.

Moved to the country and I could see chickens walking around in the backyard...the hubby put his foot down and said NO CHICKENS...they smell!!!

So I got rid of the hubby, and got 11 red sex links...strictly for their eggs, and for my girls to experience looking after them and collecting eggs. Well now I have 13 more red sex links coming in a couple of weeks. A friend of mine won me 2 silky hens and a roo, and now we have moved onto hatching some of the silky eggs...DAY 2!!!! fingers crossed!!!

Also found a new guy who is into them as well
