About a month ago I posted a photo of Big Red, questioning his gender. There is no doubt now at 12 weeks of age that he is a roo. He has actually starting making attempts at crowing, though it sounds more like someone with a bad cough! We can't help but laugh everytime we hear him.

I bought him from a local gentleman, along with 15 other day old chicks. They were supposed to be buff orpingtons. It wasn't long before I realized that 4 of the 16 chicks were not BO. They were much darker and had black tips on their wings. The gentleman only raised two other breeds ... Production reds and domineckers. He told me that Big Red must be a production red.

I am thrilled with this roo. He is definitely the alpha male and runs the coop. He is getting more beautiful every day, has HUGE feet, and is quite a bit larger than most of the flock. I suspect when he gets a little older that he's gonna be one-bad-roo and I like that for my hens' sakes.

Someone told me in the other posting that he thought Big Red looked more like a buff Ameraucana than a production red. So since he's gotten much larger... I wanted to post the question again... any idea on his breed?

Well, since he has the feathering on his face, I would agree that he looks more like an ameraucana - I don't think the production reds have the beards... I do know the ameraucana's can be bearded though. Although, It doesn't look like his legs are the proper color for an EE or Araucana, but I'm not an expert by far, so I'm simply giving my opinion on this one, with the bit of knowledge that I do have

Either way, he's a really cool roo!!

Production reds look like RIR's But have white feathers here and there.. Or are just a lot lighter then the Original.. Rhode island reds.

EE's can come any leg color, With or without beards/tufts, Rumpless/with rump. AND.. any color imaginable

NO NO NO NO NO nothing like an Araucans mayB a EE but NOT anything like an Araucana!

Meant Ameracuana, And i said he's "Closer to" Not is, or was.. Is "Closer" to one then a production red.. And he is even related to a Aracuana since that is where the Ameracuana's came from.. Therefore actually any of the names would have worked.

EEs don't have a "proper" anything. An EE is just a mix its not a breed and it has no standards, as long as it has some Ameraucana or Araucana in its lineage it is called an EE. (most of the time Ameraucana lineage)

wanda047:
What is the color of the bottom of the feet?
If the bottom of the feet are white and the legs are slate color then it could be a Ameraucana ( a bad one but a Ameraucana )
If the bottom of the feet are not white or if the legs are not slate then it is a EE..

Definitely buff. Legs look to be slate, which is the required colour for ameraucana legs. Comb looks to be pea.

Agree that there is no standard for EE and that he looks nothing like an araucana.

Production reds tend to have black feathers in wings and tail, not white--those would be sex-links. Productions tend to also be a much lighter shade than true RIR.

No idea of how to explain the mystery of where he came from.
