About a month ago I posted a photo of Big Red, questioning his gender. There is no doubt now at 12 weeks of age that he is a roo. He has actually starting making attempts at crowing, though it sounds more like someone with a bad cough! We can't help but laugh everytime we hear him.
I bought him from a local gentleman, along with 15 other day old chicks. They were supposed to be buff orpingtons. It wasn't long before I realized that 4 of the 16 chicks were not BO. They were much darker and had black tips on their wings. The gentleman only raised two other breeds ... Production reds and domineckers. He told me that Big Red must be a production red.
I am thrilled with this roo. He is definitely the alpha male and runs the coop. He is getting more beautiful every day, has HUGE feet, and is quite a bit larger than most of the flock. I suspect when he gets a little older that he's gonna be one-bad-roo and I like that for my hens' sakes.
Someone told me in the other posting that he thought Big Red looked more like a buff Ameraucana than a production red. So since he's gotten much larger... I wanted to post the question again... any idea on his breed?
