Big red tumor

I have a Barred Rock hen with the same thing! It's not in the same place, but it looks EXACTLY like that. I did tie it off, but it didn't work. I'm going to examine closely again and band it next time. I really hope someone can identify this. I haven't had much luck finding information. Researching about chicken tumors is horrifying, but it really seems more like a cyst anyway. Feather follicle cysts seem to be the most common, but not this big. Still possible, I suppose.

I've never seen anything like this so I can offer any advice.
I do have a serious question:
If is like a human zit...could it be popped?
 To me...it looks like it's soft, filled with fluid.

I am in the medical field and if this was on a person, I would totally be fascinated and want to touch it. However, since it's a chicken, it really grosses me out. I haven't touched it.... It doesn't move like it's filled with fluid, more like a heavy weight, doesn't change shape or anything. I guess if you really want to know, I could poke around on it...I guess. "insert barfy face here"

If you do...please let me know!

@KikisGirls I know, right?!? I don't even want to know what might come out of there!

@debducttape I agree. It's not totally fluid filled. Very pendulous. However, if it is some sort of feather follicle cyst, it could be full of feather debris as well. It's gag-worthy, 100%. Haha! If you mess with it, I want to see!!!!!

The hen I'm dealing with is actually my Dad's, so I'm not really sure how long it's been there. I've all but taken over his flock now, but he still gets to collect his eggs. Lol.

I think my original tie may have been preened off. The location is more towards the rear of the bird, so she could've easily tampered with it. There's very little meat holding it on, just like in the op's pic, so I'm going to try again. That seems to be a standard course of treatment for bird cysts.

@debducttape Have you learned anything new about this thing yet? I've been on the fence about following through with trying to tie/band the one I'm dealing with. I'm a little worried about flies this time of year.
