You could make a coop page article here, laying out all the details:If you guys need build details I don’t mind sharing. I’ve been building and fabricating for about 30 years and try to do things right.
I force them in every night for the first week, and lock them in until morning..... or yes, lock them in for a few days with food and water (if you have enough space in there, and Temps are good).I got my first egg from the corner of the coop floor in the pine shavings yesterday. The hens are reluctant to enter the coop on their own other than a few of them. I got 12 to come in yesterday and eat some tomatoes and salad and put one Orpington in a nest box and she checked it out and hopped down. Should I just let them figure it out on their own or do I need to get all of them inside and close them up with feed and water for three or four days?View attachment 2299712View attachment 2299714
It’s too hot right now and there’s no forcing 62 hens in there unless I chase them around and catch them one by one.I force them in every night for the first week, and lock them in until morning..... or yes, lock them in for a few days with food and water (if you have enough space in there, and Temps are good).
I usually chase in with helpers... yeah, only one person would probably be impossible. It’s too hot right now and there’s no forcing 62 hens in there unless I chase them around and catch them one by one.
I appreciate it! I have been enticing them in with vegetable trimmings and treats when I get home from work. I had them coming in and out yesterday and had 12 in at once. They will get there I’m just being impatient.I usually chase in with helpers... yeah, only one person would probably be impossible.
Maybe try to feed all treats inside the coop, or do something to help the coop be cooler.![]()
But usually they do have to be trained to the coop.
Might wait until after dark and grab them and put them in the coop.I have been enticing them in with vegetable trimmings and treats when I get home from work. I had them coming in and out yesterday and had 12 in at once. They will get there I’m just being impatient.
