Okay so within this last week we've gotten our first 4 eggs from one of our girls AND our roo found his crow (a little goofy sounding but he's a newbie so I figure he'll grow into it 😊) but yay!!!

So at first I was terrified bc my little girl started just standing around and squatting and acting sick around 4-5 in the evening (I'm in nc) well she dropped a super soft shelled egg that busted on the way out and had yolk and all but a little blood. Then about 25 min later she did the same thing again. Second one had yolk and all and a little bit more of a shell but still soft and busted when it hit the ground. Both times she was standing outside in the run and kept pecking at her vent right before. I was super worried about her. After the second one (about 15 min) she was back to normal and was perfectly fine. 2 days later I got my first hard shell cute little tan egg. So very proud of her as she's laid every day since then. Her timing has gone from about 2 pm to around 9-10 am so I'm guessing she is getting herself on a schedule.. my other 2 girls haven't started yet but I'm sure will be soon.

Now my questions..
My layer won't lay in nesting boxes. Every lay is in a different place but never in any of the boxes I have for them. Is there anything I can do to fix this or is it just something that she will fix on her own?

Her eggs are very very small like about the size of a bantam egg. I know they're supposed to be smaller but these seem tiny. Will they get bigger as she matures more? I used one last night in brownies and they turned out good. Yolk was dark yellow like it should be and shell was super super strong. It took me a few tries to crack actually. I've heard real hard shells are good but is there a such thing as too hard? And if so how do I fix?

Put fake eggs is golf balls in the nest box. They don't know what the boxes are for besides to take up space.

In my experience first eggs are bantam size or a little smaller. You should see some first time bantam eggs. Adorable.

To get her to lay in the nest boxes, you can put a ceramic eggs or golf balls in the nests (as @JacinLarkwell has already stated.)

The egg size will definitely get bigger. As a matter of fact, once they really start to lay, you might even get some really huge eggs with double yolks in them!

Finally, I don't think there is such a thing as a "too hard egg". I wouldn't worry about that.

Okay thanks! I'll get some and stick in there and hopefully I'm not gonna have to search too much longer for eggs 😂 and okay I was just wanting to be sure the eggs weren't too too small. The thing the one night with the soft eggs, is that normal? And will that happen with my other girls when they start laying as well? I was so worried bc she looked so uncomfortable!

I have never seen that before, but my birds are notorious egg eaters so they may halve consumed the evidence before I knew.

Odds are though that you'll still have eggs in the middle of no where. One of my Japanese recently has decided the middle of the run by the door is the safest place for her egg

Okay. Thanks for the reassurance! It really makes me feel better now. I'll be getting some of either to put in the boxes and see what happens. And thanks for the info on the hard shells. I was surprised bc up until we got the first actual egg they've all still been on chick feed them we switched to layer the day of the first egg. I read that as long as the shells are hard and intact then we can wait on oyster shell so I'm gonna prob grab some this weekend and just keep it up for the time being.

Okay. Is there anything I can do to make them more comfortable when they first start laying? My poor girl was so miserable I feel like she didn't know what was happening and was scared.
