I'm still in middle school and had the opportunity to bring my bator to school...bad.idea.😬 I only had two eggs cus it was winter time and the first one, I dropped it while candling, the second one, died un the first 8 hours. The next day had to tell everyone and they were so mad! And it wasn't even my fault, my teacher made me take him home early and I think he died cuz he got to cold and that same day I told everyone I had a complete meltdown cuz their were two boys making fun of me for it. Rest in peace sweety.

You tried, and you'll try again and have better results next time. :hugs Have you hatched eggs at home?

I wish teachers who allowed hatching in school knew more about chickens. Sorry that happened to you! :hugs

Don't know how I missed this thread? Anyway, I have made nearly everyone of the listed 'mistakes', except putting eggs 'pointy side up'.

Back when I first got the hatching bug, 7 years old, there wasn't a WWW you could go to for answers, still air incubators only, and the old 'spit and a prayer' method of humidity control. Hand turning was the only available option. If you were really 'into it', you had a wet bulb/dry bulb hygrometer. Most peeps hatched under broodies. The thermometers of the day were mercury filled and very accurate, so at least you had that going for ya!

Cardboard boxes were brooders, until I got a fancy-smanchy 6 stack commercial type metal brooder....man, I was 'standing in high cotton'! 🤣
Wasn't till the late 70's early 80's that I could afford a GQF cabinet incubator, until then it was my old and trusted 'still air' Browder, which I still have today but don't use.
Incubating and hatching eggs has come a long way since then, some of the equipment today, will do everything for you but lay/supply the eggs. 🤪

Yeah I am rn
Cool, well I admire you for trying. The only way to learn is to do it. Or anyway, the BEST way to learn is to do. I haven't yet so you're ahead of me. I don't have room for more chickens. And also, until now, I didn't have any I wanted to breed. But now I have Dominique cockerel almost a year old and 4 dom pullets, same age. Soo.... someday! Soon... Maybe I will hatch and sell. 🤔
