Biggest waste of government money ever

Nope, I said some people need it. I would just like heavier regulations on food stamps, what you can or cannot buy (if you're broke, you don't need to buy ciggies or alcohol) And, if someone is disabled, they are entitles to assistance (still not cigarettes or alcohol.)
My sister had left the house and cut all ties with our family. She refused our offers for help, and went on government assistance instead. About a month before the baby was born, we all made up, and she got off assistance. Now, we help care for the baby while she's at work and school. See, the family should be the first choice when one needs help, NOT the government.
But, as Cupman said, I don't think any state lets you buy cigarettes or alcohol with food stamps. In WA you can't even use it to buy toilet paper, only food.

Also, not everyone has a family that will help them.

I think it's against federal law to buy anything other then food with food stamps. Liquor stores sell more then alcohol and cigarettes.

Have either of you set foot in a liquor store???? they sell beef jerky potato chips, candybars and other snacks (like peanuts pretsels etc) and that is what they accept food stamps for convienince stores in my area accept food stamps. Why? so you can buy a hot dog and a soda that's why.

So you're saying it right that a "farm bill" should be 80% food stamps ?
Who are these some people that think feeding people is a waste of money ?
Highway bills should be 100% about highways.

I did not mean it should be 80% food stamps. I was trying to make a point about the other commentors saying that the farm bill over all is too big (maybe I misunderstood their posts). highway bills need to be about roadways (and perhaps be re-named transportation bills so it can include some money for a bike route a local rail/bus service) ag bills be about farming/ranching/fishing and social services should be seprate from those and stand on their own.

Well, the laws in WA recently changed, and quite honestly, previous to that I rarely went into a liquor store, but as I recall, the state-run liquor stores had nothing but alcohol. But anyway, there are restrictions on what you can use SNAP on and I'm glad to hear that it's at a federal level.

What state lets you use food stamps to buy liquor and cigaretes? I don't believe that for a minute.

Well here in the liberal bastion of Massachusetts food stamps are traded for cash at 50% of there value then the cash is used to buy whatever. Drugs, booze or what have you. Then you have the EBT card(electronic benefit card). This is another disaster on its own. People can and do buy alcohol and cigarettes with this card not to mention trips to Disney World( records show cash withdrawals there) cruises, tattoos and casinos. Oh you want some drugs just head to the ATM get a cash withdrawal and head to your dealer. Good stuff huh? These EBT cards are fraught with fraud and Joe taxpayer get to pay for them. There has been a report of a EBT card balance on one holders card in excess of $7000 yes SEVEN THOUSAND. All while they get a housing allowance, food stamps and government health in Mass Health. Boy I must be wrong trying to do it the right way. What kills me the most is the liberal politicians in this state just look the other way. Granted I am always willing to those truly in need. Government assistance is a leg up not a career.

Doubt anything I posted? Google/Bing Mass/welfare fraud. Have fun reading for 3 days

When customers come in and use a food stamps card the register will show the amount allowed to be used for the food stamps. It is not always the amount of the full purchase. Booze and cigarettes are NOT allowed on food stamps up here. If we sell any of these items on a food stamps card we will lose our job plus the store will lose the right to accept food stamps.

Now personally speaking I think they should do food stamps the same as WIC. You are allowed to purchase certain things. No junk food!!!!!

I know farmers that get the payments and are using the monies to pay off their land debts. I know if the payments are cut off over half our neighbors will be in trouble.

Its not so much about trying to not help people. its the fact that must people would rather sit with their finger up their *** then spend five minutes of trying to work. its all the leeches that make welfare and foodstamps a lost cause. Keep working millions on welfare depend on you

So I'm guessing if you lost your job and were unable to feed your children you would happily watch them starve rather than stoop to taking government handouts?

Pretty easy to paint the world with a single brush when you're the one holding the brush.

I lost my job once. Since my wife and I had 2 kids, I received an extra $20.00 a week. I didn't want to do it, but we were on hard times and went and looked into food stamps. Our car was worth too much so we didn't qualify. Our car was a basic Ford Escort. Their advice? Sell our car. I asked the lady, well then how can I look for work or even get there if I don't have reliable transportation? We were in a situation where we could really have used a hand up, but since we didn't know how and were unwilling to work the system, we were forced to make it on our own. The problem that you have now is that people know how to work the system and that hurts those that could really use some help from the system.

I'm all for helping people with a hand up, but many many Americans are lazy and unwilling to put forth the effort to get ahead in life. They expect things to be easy on them.
