I agree with @Ole rooster . I'm not sitting out like I'm on a turkey hunt. I see a predator and a few minutes later it is a meal for the buzzards. Fast, effective, and permanent solution. Very little time invested.
Fencing is definitely not more cost effective. It would be pretty expensive to fence in my property, plus the logistics would require a lot of creativity.
My run is very secure. Free ranging is where the danger is. Like I said, I don't rely on my dogs; their existence is not an effective deterrent, as evidenced by fox scat on my property within smelling distance of dog piles, and I'm not going to send my dogs chasing after an animal that potentially has who-knows-what disease they could pass on to my dogs and/or create a situation where bites and other wounds need to be treated.
Foxes are the only thing I shoot from a distance; it protects my flock but is also condoned by the local F&W for population control. Binoculars are handy for eliminating the need to pull out the rifle just to find that the movement out in the distance is a cat, turkey, fawn or other non-target animal, and for general surveying.
