Bio Spot hell

We see a lot of reactions to otc flea products in dogs and cats. Most people think they are the same as frontline and advantage-NOT. I even use frontline on my chickens for mites and lice. Most of the otcs are pyrethrins or permethrins which actually are natural products but can be dangerous in animals sensitive to them. They are derivatives from the mum plant. If your vet has contacted them about the reaction they should pay the bill, the times we have had reactions to products the companies have footed most if not all the bill.

I tell people who ask to never never NEVER use any flea product from wal-mart or over the counter. You wouldn't believe the horror stories I've seen and heard.

Especially for cats. They are sensitive and one of the main poisons used in most OTC flea products is highly dangerous for them.

For those of you not wishing to use Frontline/Advantage, try Comfortis. It's a pill, and I've used it on my tiny chihuahua who has terrible allergies to fleas and when the Advantage AND Frontline stopped working. The Comfortis worked quite well and with no side effects.

There was another topical, I forget the name, but the commercial showed a flea circus? I asked my vet about it and she showed me where one of their cats had shook it off and it had taken the PAINT off their printer.

No thanks.

It's called Promeris and it smells awful. It is new to the market and they are seeing more side effects that they hadn't experienced in the testing stages so I think they are actually re-vamping the product on the down-low.
I, personally, don't use any flea products but I would avoid Bio-Spot and Promeris like the plague.

I just wanted to point out that Revolution is primarily prescribed for Heartworm treatment. Although it does also kill fleas, ticks and intestinal parasites, it is mainly for heartworm. It is supposed to work on a neural pathway that 'higher' life forms don't have.

The treatment for HW is fatal for cats, so if you live in a high risk area, you have to weigh that into your decision.

I'm not advocating Revolution, just pointing out it's differences.
