I have some 3 week old cochin chicks several of which I thought were simply black Cochins but I've noticed some brown barring on the black wing feathers of a few. Has anyone had birchen chicks and is this how they initially present ? Thanks.

I've put everybody to bed but this pic from a day or so ago catches the brown barring I'm talking about on the chick in the foreground. Not a good pic.

From this angle it kind of looks like a partridge Cochin. But it's hard to tell. Brown in a birchin isn't normal as far as I know but......

This is the one I was considering partridge. The black chick is nothing like this.

My birchens have just looked black as chicks until they feather out all the way, then the get the silver birchen color. I can't see the color well from the pic, but I'm also thinking partridge, that's the only color I know right off that goes through a barred juvenile plumage. Birchen doesn't.

Thanks. Ill post a better pic tomorrow. Any thoughts on the brown chick in post #5 as far as her type? Again, I was assuming partridge but this is my first time with Cochins.

Partridge w/o a doubt. That's what our handsome roo looked like as a baby,

Big bootiful boy! Haha :love
We had a Black one that got silver lacing. Was really slow feather-er, think it was a male. Never seen black go to barred like a partridge though.
