I would have said likely a mix, but I've not seen a Birchen Marans in my life. All these varieties are making my head swim.

So Birchen gives the silver coloring and the Marans come in a black, blue and splash variety, just like other blue chicken genetics. They are still fairly rare in the US though Meyer just started carrying them. Instead of the copper highlights you would see with the black copper Marans you will see silver feathering. The roosters are absolutely stunning when they’ve all feathered out!I have a blue birchen pullet, had a black one as well but sold her as she was so mean to the other birds!
Mine was not mean to me, but both she and her sister have never been very friendly, even though they were handled daily and brooded in the house. The black one would terrorize the younger pullets, so she had to go! I hatched them from eggs from a local breeder. Kept the blue as she is gorgeous, if not my favorite and looking forward to those eggs!I also have a black marans that I wanted to breed her with him .. she is also a mean one. . I always get pecked by her.
