Bird bath heater for ducks pool

Hey guys,
Winter is officially here! Since my girls love swimming no matter how cold it is, I’ve been looking into a way to keep their pool from freezing. I saw on some other threads that people recommended using a bird bath heater to keep the pool from freezing. I’ve been looking into getting one, but I got a little scared off when I saw some reports of electric leakage. I’m still interested in getting one since it’ll keep the ducks much happier. Have any of you guys used a bird bath heater for a duck pool? Do you have any recommendations on any certain units or bands? Also what wattage would be good?

Hello! I used one for my two call ducks last winter without issue. . it worked well. I don't know what the wattage is. I just use it in one of those black rubber water dishes.
I do worry about them getting shocked :fl
But I check it every day and so far it's not been an issue. I have the cord hung up above it so that the outlet can't get splashed and so that no water runs down the cord on to the plug.
 
Might I suggest that you hook up a ground wire? Put one (bare) end into the water, maybe wrapped around part of the heater, and the other end gets pushed into the ground. You've now created a path of least resistance for any leaking current.

I shoulda worded that *concern* not issue, lol...

I don't think so, but I haven't ever used a heater... stock tank heaters are meant to be in where livestock stick their mouths though... :confused:

Once my bigger pools freeze solid, mine just get the small pans til thaw... I just flip the ice out and fill each day...

Oh I totally get what your saying. . anytime there is electricity around water there is always that chance.
