I got my new chickens from a local farmer in NJ thinking that they were from her farm. Now I am finding out that many of these farmers order chicks from the Midwest and just resell them. I sent an email to the farmer inquiring..not sure if they will tell the truth, When they grow up I planned to put them in with my existing chickens. If they are from the Midwest do I have to get them tested?

If you are buying hatching eggs or chicks, especially from a reputable breeder or hatchery, it is unlikely they have bird flu. Make sure to quarantine any new arrivals for a few weeks before introduction. During the heat of the summer bird flu doesn't spread as well.

I hope this helps. Best of luck!

Thanks! it has been 90 degrees for the last few days so I suppose that is hot enough. How far away to I have to keep them from my other flock...or is it just the wild bird vector threat?

It is suggested to keep new birds at least 100 ft away from your existing flock to quarantine them and to care for them after the original flock, wash your hands and perhaps even change and shower between caring for them. Don't use the same waterers, feeders, utensils, ect when caring for them.
