Bird has a black bottom and protrusion below the vent. I can’t tell if it a scab or dried poop. Can anyone advise?

I would agree that you can try to handle this at home. The bumblefoot can wait, since the flystrike wound under the bent is her main issue. The soaking should continue each day. Chlorhexidene 2% is great if available. Epsom salts soaking is good, and saline is also okay. But the antibiotic ointment is necessary. I don’t know how this will end up, but the vets do not sound helpful. Chickens can amaze you with their survival from wounds. Is she eating and drinking normally?
She is not eating or drinking normally. I could feel her clavicle and see it stick out when I tried to lay her down on her back yesterday.

She stands alert and grooms herself a bit. But she is not yet responding to warm eggs.

I worry there are maggots inside her under all the black stuff. I watched a few YouTube videos of open wounded chickens with the maggots hidden under the skin. It was gross but could be happening with her.

I wonder if the black stuff could just be pulled off And liquid bandaid could be applied? I did not see any black skin in those videos.

The owner is back and he is evaluating.

Final update. Owner took chicken to vet who said there is a lot of fluid in her belly and it is probably a tumor. It is odd to me that there was No mention of the black stuff and wound. The chicken was euthanized because the prognosis was maybe a month to live with a lot of TLC. So sad, but with that analysis I think it was the best decision.

Thank you backyard chickens again for your time, encouragement, thoughts and words. I don’t have chickens but I know I will visit this forum with more questions about my friend’s chickens and read various posts.

All the best and none of the worst.

I still can’t believe the vet didn’t mention the wound. Maybe the tumor was the main reason she ended up wounded in the first place.

I take a courtesy or a bow to you all in gratitude 🙏

You did a great job taking care of her! I’m glad she is no longer suffering.:hugs

You did such a great job taking care of her. Your friend is lucky to have you and I'm glad to hear they took her to the vet.

I don't know much about it, but perhaps the tumour and the wound were all part of the same thing. At least she isn't suffering now.

Moving forward, when are you getting your first chickens? 😁

You know you are hooked now, right?

If your friend saw ‘worms’ last week, those could have been maggots. Since he didn’t look and see anything on her back, I question that he really saw worms. My guess is they were maggots and they pupate very quickly. You will not see maggots a week later.

I don’t see anything wrong with the feet. She could be turning it because of the pain. That hole in the back looks like it involves muscle.I would not splint it.

Hahaha. Mr 8p fox and family 🦊 would love that. Maybe when my life normalizes a bit. Things are too topsy turvy at the moment. When I settle somewhere- I will definitely consider it.

Sorry for your friend’s loss, and thank you for taking such good care of this hen.
Thank so much. Your advice helped me immensely. I looked forward to your replies as well as everyone else’s input. I felt less alone, helpless, and lost with this golden fluffy chicken who softly chirped at me when I was with her. I had never before witnessed a soft sound from that little lady when she was out in the yard.

I honestly had tears streaming from my face when I left the chicken last night. And now a few drop while I write here.

I think this group forum is pretty awesome. I was afraid I wouldn’t get a reply, but I did!!! 🧡💜💛
