I was curious to ask how common is it to have bird mites on chickens?
A family member who practically demanded I give them my chickens, later came back and claimed they'd gotten bird mites from my chickens. And then got rid of them.
This seems highly unlikely. First, they had a long history of antagonism towards me, and patterns of blame. I won't go into that but could go into this for pages of description.
Suffice it to say it seems pretty unlikely that they could have gotten bird mites from my birds. I don't have bird mites and don't have any itching either. I'd never gotten anything from my chickens or ducks. And they've always been healthy and not been showing any symptoms of anything.
But it did make me curious to wonder, what are the chances that something like catching bird mites from your chickens could happen? (Particularly when they have a really big yard to run around in, and no tight closed in cramped quarters, and not showing any symptoms or history of illness?)
