I had Red Bird Mites in my chicken coup last summer. I have since moved my chickens to another coop 3 weeks ago. I’m wondering if anyone knows if the mites would still be present in my coop after being vacant for a month? My understanding is they would need blood to survive and if they don’t have any they would move on to where they would find blood again.
Anyone know?

I would like to be able to put my chicks in here soon but don’t want to leave them susceptible to mites. Also, would a drop of ivermectin hurt a 4 week old chick if necessary?

More than likely they are no longer in the coop. I had mites in one coop and then discovered mites in another coop that is not close to the coop I originally found them in. Wild birds and rodents can bring them in. I treated all of my coops with permethrin as a precaution since I had found some in one coop and then found some in another coop. I put the dust in the nest boxes. A bonus is there is no egg withdrawal period.
