Sadly 3 of my chicks got eaten by a hawk. It flew away when it saw me walking outside. I never seen any hawks flying around before. It left the head back. The rest of the body was gone.

I'm so sorry for your loss. I HATE hawks. The worst part is that there is no good way to keep them at bay. I found that putting up some of those reflective sticks that are at feed and hardware stores and hanging up some plastic crows helped. I kept my birds in for the first 2 months I had them at my new house and the hawks lost interest. If I ever see one I keep my birds in for about 2 days and they go away. I hope that all your other birds stay safe.

If they are kind of at an angle so that they see it and it hits them right in the eye they will either go haywire and run into something (maybe just permanently get rid of them?) or turn around.

I also heard that a string of DVD's or CD's hung on the coop or a tree will divert them, but that might not look very good. Might be more appropriate at Christmas time, if you can pass it off as decorations.

Also, in some states I think (might be wrong) you can get a permit to kill hawks, but only so many per year.

Yes I think the CD part works. I tried that before because my mom made a patio in the backyard. THe birds kept coming in to poop on the porch. She attach some CD to a string and the birds stopped coming in.
