bird seed chickens & sweet neighbor

My sweet older nieghbor has a ton off bird feeders. He loves that the chickens come over and clean up all the spilled seed, he has started putting seed out for the girls incase there isn't enough on the ground, needless to say they are not eating laying pellets at home. I keep them in intill around noon hoping they will eat their laying pellets, when I let them out they look like the chicken butt train running to his house, Now the question can I mix bird seed with the pellets to encourge them to eat at home and stop eating out so much. To add I have tried crumbles instead of pellts they like the seed better.
I know I should be thankfull I have such good neighbors and I am because they wern't always no friendly like when we had a teenage son at home!!!!

given the option, they will choose seed, and no they will just scratch the feed out onto the ground and pick out the seed. the only thing you can do is what you are doing (keeping them up for part of the day) and asking your neighbor to not give them more than what is spilled.
