bird training a dog

This is purely curiosity. Does anyone know how to train your dog to retrieve birds without hurting it?

That's interesting. I hope to get a dog soon and would love to teach it to round up the chickens.

I would think if you sort of teach it to "barrel race" then you can work your way from their, after changing the barell to a chicken.

It would be really easy if you had a shepherd or a Border Collie.

We had a cattle dog would herd rabbits. Pretty helpful and fun to watch too!

He didn't retrieve the rabbits, just herded them. But he would catch & hold them by just laying his muzzle on them, pinning them down until someone could come get it.
