I have a Japanese Quail that overnight developed a hematoma at the shoulder joint. The wing cannot be closed and is held stiff and open. There are no obvious signs of trauma or puncture.

The bird is eating and feces looks normal. Can someone advise a treatment? Many thanks!

Most hematomas are caused by an injury or some type of trauma. Your bird has more than likely injured its wing. Can you tell if it has a fracture? If you can gently maneuver the wind back in place, you can use vet wrap to secure the wing next to its body. If the wing is allowed to flop around, it can cause more injury. I know with human hematomas, cold compresses are used on and off, then heat after 48 hrs. Maybe someone else who has dealt with this can give you more advice. Hope your quail starts feeling better.

Thanks so much for your post. Unable to tell if the wing is broken - no apparent sign. The bird was initially holding the wing stiffly out the the side so there was no flopping around, and now a day later it appears that the wing is gradually being held lower and closer to the body. Will the hematoma if left untreated just eventually be absorbed by the body?
