Birds dying right now--don't need advice yet, just need measurements

yes that will be fine... do not give vitamins again until you have completed the antibiotic .
As long as the bleach airs out properly no worries (the fumes will be noxious to the birds so keep them well away till aired and dried...should be at least a ten percent solution)..you need to clean first with soap and water as organic matter nullifies the bleach.

... bubbly yellow poo is a sign of worms and if you can get the ivomec Eprinex (spot-on method) it is safe and will get most kinds of worms and treat many types of external parasites as well...

Thank you for all your help. We cleaned out the coop as best we could tonight and got the birds in there at dark. The 2 sickest ones seemed to be doing better and wanting to walk around more after we gave them the vitamin water.

We also spread the diatomaceous earth around their yard.

We are going to let them out first thing in the morning, and we will clean out the coop even better. I'll see about the worm medicine you are talking about. I need to pick up more feed and bedding anyway. I'll keep you posted.

You've probably already thought of this, but could they have gotten into something like rat poison or some other chemical around the yard? Just something to be careful about...

the DE you used..is it food grade? or garden grade?
if it's garden grade, it might not be safe.

do treat your birds legs that have sores...wash and dry well.
apply light coat of polysporin.
do clean off any red or bloody spots, since this will cause them to peck each other, causing more sores.
pecking the vents can end in tragedy..

do treat your coop for bugs........using a poultry coop spray...such as permathrin.

what bedding are you using?
what antibiotic will you be getting?
IMO, Tylan or gallimycin (ery-mycin/erythromycin) is preferable.
Tylan products will be found in the livestock section of feed/farm stores.
it comes in water soluble form and injectable form.

I agree with using the higher dose if opting for terramycin.
1 teaspoon is more for maintenance then treatment.

what strength piperazine do you have? Wazine 17?

please make sure they get some extra protein mixed with feed..chopped eggs is an option.
make sure their feed is fresh, and the water clean and fresh.

Okay, no more bird loss after 2 days. I started them on terramycin yesterday since that's what I had.

I just use pine shavings for the birds. The DE I used is food grade.

Talked to the state diagnostic lab yesterday. Guess a lot of people have been calling about bird loss due to gnats and/or mites. He suggested Sevin dust as did a friend of mine and also suggested I spray the whole chicken area with malathion to kill the bugs.

They were huddling in a corner a lot yesterday and shaking and scratching at their heads a whole bunch. They were pretty miserable as far as that goes. Some of scractched a lot of the feathers of their heads.

Last night, we dusted all the chickens with the Sevin dust. The chickens look a little better this morning. We are going to take out the new bedding we just put in and dust the inside of the coop real good before we put in more bedding.

I think the blue skin on some of the birds was cyanosis. Not sure what was causing that. I read that Fowl Cholera can cause that, but I really don't know much about it. Would explain quick and sudden loss of my birds though.

I would keep up the Terramycin. You may need to do it for a couple weeks. Do they have contact with any wild animals or rats/mice? I know that mine contracted Salmonella after coming in contact with a HUGE rat. We did the Terramycin for 2 weeks and ended up loosing half our flock. I hope you have better luck. When I had the state Vet here he said not to use shaving that would hold in germs longer than hay or just a bare floor. Hope this helps..

Unfortunately, in the past few months, at least one rat seems to have taken up residence near or under the coop. We have seen it several times at night, and it gets in their water and leaves droppings there or on the floor. I cannot put out poison. I just don't know much about them. Is there a good way to catch them and get rid of them? We have just started pulling the feed out of the coop at night too to discourage the rat going in there for food. Guess we might have to do that with the water, as well.

If we don't put down bedding, would that entail scraping the floor every day? I live in a suburb, so keeping smell down is of utmost importance.

We will definitely keep up the terramycin. I actually had to buy eggs last night at the grocery store. What a bummer.

Try a rat trap away from where you ladies are or a have a heart trap to try and catch it. Is there anyway that you can use decon without your ladies getting it? I did that and put away from the ladies and the rat was gone within days. Even if they eat the feces of the rat after he eats the decon it wont hurt them. It will get rid of your rat, just keep your eyes open to make sure that he doesnt die in with them or they will eat him and get more sick. I hope this helps and please keep me posted to your progress. It was a very hard things to deal with, we lost several to salmonella. I did about 1 and 1/2 tsp. of terracymin to a gallon of water, that is what my state vet told me to do. I hope you can save the rest of your flock it is sad to see them suffer in this manor.
