birds infecting us

Bunylady - So true! If you have duck dung on your finger then adjust your contact lens with said finger sans sanitation then be prepared for a visit to the eye doc or worse.
Likewise a small dose of salmonella or undercooked chicken liver may go unnoticed but don't let your guard down and jump into a full meal of it unless you're willing to pay the price.

I was just holding her up to me on the couch. It lasted maybe 2 mins and had to bring her back out. So I didn't have that problem.

A poor sense of timing has gotten me pooped on when I was only holding a bird for a matter of seconds, and the more stressed the animal is, the more likely it will empty the tanks, as it were.

Lol! Yeah I won't be doing any of those things!

You can get sick from chickens, but most can be avoided by simply washing your hands after caring for them. Keeping their set up as clean as possible, will help too (good management practices). As well, if you have a compromised immune system, then you probably are best to not handle them or take extra precautions.

You can look up other websites that veriify the info - the cdc is cautioning against salmonella and backyard chickens. Again, washing your hands will prevent this. I don't rub my face on my chickens, but I have petted them and of course held them to care for them. I keep my boots outside and always wash my hands when finished tending to them.
