This is the second time that we've had a hawk TRY to take one of our chickens.

The first time our Jersey Giant roosters took care of it. This time I ran outside in time and the hawk backed away from my chicken that it was trying to take. It couldn't make it out of the fence or out of the fishing line that I have set up so I had to help it. I have fishing line about every 2 ft making kind of a roof on my huge 7,000 SQ FT run. The hawk was appreciative for the help...

Gorgeous bird! Sorry it can't get a free meal in my yard though. It can get food elsewhere.

It was trying to get my polish chicken, which I can't find right now. I'm not sure where she went, but the hawk did not leave with her. I'm hoping she's just hiding out and I can check her for injuries which I will treat. She can come inside and hang out until she's healed. The roosters are BS right now about the hawk.

So for the first hawk, your BJG roos fought it off?? How many do have and how big are they?? I ask because this is one reason why I have my BJG cockerel, he seems eager for this kind of job lol.
Yes. I have two and the hawk was trying to get one of the hens but they were not going to let that happen. They made sure that all of the hens and ducks went inside the coop and they both got huge in their hackles... They started making crazy noises and stomping their feet and scratching their feet. Then they charged it. The hawk I don't think was expecting it and it flew over the fence then whacked into a couple trees.

I gave the boys lots of treats after that...

This time the boys started making warning calls because by the time they saw the hawk, I think it was already on top of my Polish.

I walked down and got very close to the hawk. It backed off instantly. My husband just told me I'm crazy when I told him what I did :gigHe said I'm lucky it didn't attack me! I don't care if it would have attacked me because at least it would have saved my chicken!

It was having trouble getting out of our fence in area, we use deer fencing that's 8 ft high. It kept running into the fencing trying to fly out. I just kept getting closer and closer to it until it could finally make it out. I was going to lift it up if it was going to have more issues trying to get out, I'm not afraid of these gorgeous birds. It flew up and looked back at me either thanking me that I helped it or pissed off because it didn't get my chicken :lau

Love the fishing line idea!! Would you be willing to post a photo of it?

That is awesome!!! Have you ever weighed them?? If I remember they are close to mine in age, the 6-8 month range right?

I honestly do not handle them because they can get quite aggressive and they are very large. Judging by their size and how hard they can kick, I would say that they are about 10 lb. I got kicked by Squatch about 2 months ago and he left a footprint bruise on my knee!
