Birds of Prey:0 Me:2

My run is way to big to use any type of netting that's why I use fishing line.

Our run seems to get bigger and bigger every couple months!

I'm glad you found something that worked to keep them away! I had a raven that took a chick in the spring.
Glad the fishing line is working. I originally had some fishing line up but an owl got through and killed some birds. I have a couple of coops that are open on one side that my hubby and a friend built as a surprise for me. Their hearts were in the right place. I have since put tarps over the open side of those coops. These are my pens and they are completely covered with netting. I did cover it many years ago when the trees were small. 200'x60'. The fences are 5'.

Yeah, the other day I heard one of them hawks screaming outside. Its the first one I'd heard in years. I guess they know I have chickens now. Good thing I hadn't let them out into the garden area, yet. I like that fishing line idea, too. We used to have it on the around the garden with bells, to let us know if a deer jumped the fence. However I did buy some wire netting on Ebay, to put over the top of an additional run, I'm making. Fishing line would definitely be cheaper. :)

Wow, Nice place cmom. Are those Leghorns you got? They sure are big, if they are

A week ago the same thing happened to me. A hawk got one of my silkies so my rooster and I sprinted over together to try to save her. The hawk tried to fly off with her but got too frazzled. That sure got my adrenaline up. The hawk was back a couple times last week. Two days ago all my chickens were totally still, and facing the same upward direction. I couldn't see anything myself but once I started screaming that hawk flew out of its hiding spot :).

Coopers hawks and peregrine falcons both kind of look like ospreys to me, but I don't know anything.

So for the first hawk, your BJG roos fought it off?? How many do have and how big are they?? I ask because this is one reason why I have my BJG cockerel, he seems eager for this kind of job lol.
I had a wonderful Jersey Giant rooster once. He and the hens roamed our yard until the day I drove in the driveway and a hawk rose from the ground and perched on top of the house. I looked down the yard and there lay my Jersey Giant rooster: dead from a slash across the back of the neck near the head. I almost cried. The hawk wisely sailed away before I could get a gun. You are lucky the hawk did not damage any of your chickens, that is, unless you found your Polish chicken somewhere with its neck slashed.
