Birds on concrete

welcome to BYC -- are you planning to bed over the concrete or are you wanting to house your birds directly on the concrete? Is there a particular reason (beyond it already being there) that you are wanting to use it? Will the birds be confined to the coop/run at all times or will they have access to open ground outside of the run?

I have a concrete slab i'd like to use as a run, any advice?

I have my coop and run on a concrete slab.Thats a picture of it on my avatar. Reason being is that it was already there when we moved in. So we built the coop and run right on it. It works great for us. Its been 4 years now. I use the deep litter method and I add all kinds of stuff like leaves, wood chips, weeds, straw, dirt etc. It builds its own little eco system just like it would if it was on dirt.
Does that help at all?

House on the outside, run on the concrete, under the house would be dirt. Thought i might put a smaller run from the slab into the yard just so they could have a dirt run also.

If your run isnt on the dirt, id add some good quality (garden grade) dirt to the litter mix you put on top of the concrete. it will help the litter work better for sure. my coop floor is all dirt, and its what id recommend, but ive also done brooding indoors and when dirt was used along with the bedding materisls poop was metabolized much better. dirt is also good for the birds (grit, minerals, beneficial microbes and fungi, etc). dont forget they need a place to dustbathe too...
