Bitey Things

Yep, sounds like classic sand fleas. They never get much higher than the knee and you probably won’t notice the bites until later.
They only come out during a certain time of year here and we mostly ignore them. If they are that bad, you could try sprinkling sevin dust or using a permethrin spray.

I'm having no see um issues as well (northeast Florida). My no see ums are all over the inside, as well outside the coop. There seem to be thousands of them.
Last night I put a Black Flag bug zapper in the coop: https://amzn.to/2MszFse
I also smashed a bunch with a t-shirt.
This morning, most all were gone. Still some alive. I just installed a small fan in the overhead of my coop to blow these little devils out.
Here's a pic showing the few dead no see ums I was able to keep from blowing out of my hand while trying to take the picture.

We get no-see em’s for about a month maybe...I’m lucky enough to have allot of bats that come to my yard every night they love them and mosquitoes too!
As much as the High Desert can have challenges to live in I’m thankful... we don’t have fleas or ticks.
